New Nokia phone or N-Gage2 ? Nokia took pains to say that this was just a concept, and not a product under development. On the flip side are standard phone buttons, while on this side a slide out set of gaming controls and a 16x9 screen deliver a stylish gaming experience in a smartphone package. (Jim Louderback/Ziff Davis Internet News) Instead of keeping it as a separate platform, Nokia on Tuesday rolled out plans to move its N-Gage gaming platform into select smart phones, due in 2006 and beyond. .

Firstly mobile phone with hard disk and wi-fi (nokia n91) and now this:
… which is a phone for gaming with hardware suport for 3D graphics and powered by symbianism series 60. It can draw 1 million polygons per second compared to only 80.000 polygons per second for current series 60 phones.
nokia concluded: software-wise maybe we can’t beat microsoft, but since microsoft can’t do hardware in mobile phones and we can, so we will put stress on hardware and add hard disks, 3G, videotelephony, wi-fi, 3D graphical processors and other hardware goodies - in this way we will screw Microsoft up!

Symbian SDK on Unix HOWTO The SymbianOS SDK is built to run on a WIN32 system. It consists of 2 toolchains. One for building the code for the Epoc32-Emulator on Windows (called the WINS target) using one of the commercial C++ compilers from Borland, Metrowerks or Microsoft.A second one, using gcc for the so called MARM target which is the phone itself (e.g Nokia 6600 or SE P910). Symbian released the modified gcc source together with the source for 4 important tools, which makes it possible to build C++ programs without a Windows emulator. Alternatives: It is possible to get the second chain running on Unix. There are more alternatives, which are different in how the makefiles are built: The one described in this document, where you use makefiles directly. Bulding console C/C++ programs (.exe), shared libraries (.dll) or C++ applications (.app) is supported. There are even builtin rules to build a complete sis file (i.e. installation file), so you do not need to fight with the .pkg file syntax. GnuPOC, which takes the "Symbian" way, using makmake to generate makefiles from "makmake project" files (.mmp). .

Nokia Pushes Web Services on Symbian OS Nokia plans to keep its mobile devices competing against Windows Mobile by adding support for Web services to all Symbian smart phones by next year."There are two protocol families emerging," says Timo Skytta, director of Web services at Nokia. "One is SIP-based, from a voice background. The other is Web services, emerging from IT vendors such as Sun and Microsoft. Nokia needs to let people develop applications using both." .

Nokia Sensor See and Be Seen Nokia Sensor is a spontaneous, sociable application for spontaneous, sociable people. With Nokia Sensor you can create your own personal pages - called a folio - on your phone. Then you can check out the folios of other Sensor users nearby, exchange messages, and share files. Connect on the Spot . Nokia Sensor uses Bluetooth wireless technology, which means that it works within a 'circle' of up to 10 meters around your phone. When other Sensor phones come within this circle, your phone can 'sense' them and you can see their folios and send them messages. As soon as you step out of each other's circles, you are no longer able to communicate via Sensor. .

SYMBIAN NEW TROJANS DOUBLES IN ONE DAY Symbian anti-virus specialist SimWorks announced today that it has identified 52 previously unknown trojans for the Symbian platform, more than all of the trojans and other malware for Symbian based devices combined identified to date. The trojans appear to be cracked versions of popular Symbian applications such as BitStorm, BugMe!, Cosmic Fighter, 3D Motoracer and SplashID. In addition to the installation files for the application itself, the files also include various versions of previously known malware such as Cabir and Locknut. SimWorks CEO Aaron Davidson says ÂThis is a significant development as until now we've usually found mobile trojans two or three at a time at the most. It would be easy for a malware writer to create 1 trojan and give it 52 different names however this is not the case here where we have 52 separately cracked and infected applications. Somebody has gone to an awful lot of time and effort to turn these outÂ. ÂPrevious mobile viruses have either been able to spread but cause no harm or alternatively have been able cause significant harm but not able to spread. .

Symbian UIQ Handy Tools 2005 Professional As a business person always on the road I need tools which make my life easier. As a technical nerd I have been testing many platforms and programs. The P900 equipped with the Handy Tools 2004 is the first solution which really works for me . I can easily keep an overview of my meetings , I can handle travel data in the database and keep track of my expenses. In addition I can define call-lists professionally and have a working task-manager. For the call-list/desktop I used Tracker from Symbianware before, however, Tracker is a lot less professionally programmed and somewhat "playful" to use (however - the service was quicker and nicer - anyway - to me the product counts first). Tested some programs - now I am really happy about the program "Handy Safe". At last I have my passwords all in one place and do not have a nervous breakdown when I miss my P900 from time-to-time. As I have to manage IT professionals from time to time I claim to be able to judge usability and quality of programming. In contrast to many other programs I tested those Handy Tools Suite 2005 really makes sense. .

Symbian UIQ Benq P31 Specifications The Symbian based PDA , the P 31 is the next in line after the successful P30. Handwriting recognition, 1.3 Megapixel camera and the huge touchscreen are just a few things that the P 31 has. Base specifications include tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS, but unfortunately there's no EDGE support - something of a faux pas for a communicator that's just gone on sale. As for other connectivity, we have USB, Infrared and Bluetooth, which is suitably comprehensive. .

Monopoly Schmonopoly I'm fed up with people complaining that Symbian has a monopoly in the Smartphone market. Many (if not most) of those who complain are Microsoft fangirls who refer to the monopoly as being unfair and abused while the minority who don't have a Windows powered brain compare the monopoly with Microsoft's monopoly on the desktop.
While I hold the opinion that Symbian is by far the best platform for any Smartphone, I also believe that Symbian got to where it is in the market by being first, by being innovative and by being bold with the backing of willing companies. I also hold this opinion; Symbian does not have a monopoly in the Smartphone market and here I'll present some of the evidence behind my claim...

New Symbian malware SymbOS/Hobbes.A. It is a SIS based trojan that pretends to be Symantec Anti-Virus for Symbian phones. When the trojan is installed it shows dialog instructing user to reboot his phone, to activate the Anti-Virus. Of course the trojan contains no Anti-Virus just a component that disables the Phone application menu. We have tested the trojan on different phones and it seems to affect only the old versions of Symbian Series 60 phones, such as NGage and 3650. To our knowledge the trojan is not in the wild, but any user who happens to install it, should not reboot their phones. And uninstall the file with Application manager. The SymbOS/Hobbes.A trojan is already detected with F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus using generic detection introduced in database update 15 published in December 13th, 2004 .
